My 5 Favourite Ways to use Coconut Oil

Hello gorgeous!

Things are cooling down here in the Southern Hemisphere and with that comes dry, cracked skin that is calling out for some TLC. Cue the glorious coconut oil!

I love coconut oil. Being someone who is trying to cut back on having so many things, its versatility excites me even more. Today I am sharing with you some of my favourite uses for what some are calling ‘the healthiest oil on earth.’

1. Moisturiser

Coconut oil is a staple in my morning routine for several reasons, the first being moisturising. Coconut oil is great for improving complexion, suppleness and elasticity. I dry body brush before getting in the shower each morning and then I cover my body in coconut oil when I get out. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and smelling amazing! My puppy has taken a liking to licking it off my feet as well!

2. Oil Pulling

This is another part of my morning routine for which I use coconut oil. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method used for detoxing. The oil along with your saliva binds with the bacteria and toxins ready to be disposed of. Oil pulling also helps to whiten your teeth and improve the health of your gums.

Simply melt a teaspoon of oil in a small container and then swish it in your mouth for 5–20 minutes. I like to do it while I am in the shower as I am pressed for time in the morning.

3. Make-up Remover

Being a contact lens wearer I often struggle to find a make-up remover that doesn’t leave my eyes sore and irritated the next day. When I started using coconut oil as a make-up remover it had such a big impact – it is softer on my eyes and tends to get mascara off more easily as well.

4. Hair Mask

Having long hair, I used to struggle with split ends… but no more! Using coconut oil as a hair mask deeply conditions and softens the ends of my hair. As my hair is naturally quite oily I usually apply the oil to the ends and tie it up in a bun and leave it in overnight. You can leave it on for 10 minutes or 3 hours – as long as you like, and afterwards your hair will be so soft and smooth.

5. Cooking

Coconut oil is fantastic for cooking as it has a high smoke point, meaning you can cook it at high temperatures without it changing to a nasty trans fat. It is great to use either roasting or sautéing vegetables, as a rub on roast meats, cooking stir-fries and so much more. I often put a spoon of coconut oil in my smoothies and in my porridge which makes it really creamy and I even use coconut oil when making my popcorn these days!
